Breakfast Brief
High heat & storms impact the East

Showers and thunderstorms associated with remnants of Beryl will continue to spread across the Great Lakes and then into the Northeast, increasing flash flood concerns across the region. Meanwhile, record-high temperatures continue through at least Thursday across large portions of the West.

Did you know?

On this day in 1936, a significant heatwave affected the United States, particularly the Midwest, during the hottest summer of the Dust Bowl era. This heatwave saw temperatures soar to all-time highs in 12 states, with some areas experiencing temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

The historic heatwave across the West continues, with multiple record-breaking temperatures reported in several states since the weekend. Redding and Palm Springs, Calif., join Las Vegas on the list of cities recently reaching all-time record-high temperature records. As we head into mid-July, the heatwave will expand into the Central U.S., affecting the Plains and Midwest.

extreme west tempPalm Springs reached a historic high of 124 degrees on Friday, the highest in recorded history. Las Vegas hit 120 degrees on Sunday, breaking its previous record by three degrees, while Redding set an all-time high of 119 degrees on Saturday.

Showers and thunderstorms continue to spread east across the northeastern quadrant of the U.S. Fueled by deep tropical moisture and remnants of Beryl, some of these storms could be prolific rainfall producers, increasing the risk for isolated flash flooding. In addition to heavy rain, there is a risk of damaging winds and a few tornadoes, mainly from northern Pennsylvania to western Massachusetts.

A southern flow is bringing high humidity from the south across much of the Eastern Seaboard. High humidity combined with elevated temperatures is resulting in dangerously high feels-like temperatures. Many areas will see feels-like temperatures in the 90s and 100s and even as high as the 110s.

Tropical update:

Besides Beryl's remnants, which have lost most of their tropical characteristics, no other tropical systems are expected to impact the U.S. in the next seven days. We will have another update in tomorrow's Breakfast Brief.
